Why do I need nail surgery?

An ingrown nail can be painful and become infected.

Sometimes the only option is to remove the offending part of the nail, or in some cases the whole nail.

When the toe heals the nail has a straight edge that no longer grows in, or the whole nail is permanently removed.

How do we do it?

  • We administer a small anaesthetic injection into the toe to completely numb it

  • We remove the side  of the nail or the entire nail.

  • A chemical called phenol is applied to kill the nail growth cells

  • We dress the toe with a large bandage

  • The next day we replace the dressing and advise you on how to look after it at home with redressing it.

  • We see you another 1 or 2 times to ensure it is healing well
